Chester Mystery Plays

The Flood from Genesis as interpreted in the Plays
The Flood from Genesis as interpreted in the Plays

Throughout June and July this year, the city of Chester will see the resurrection of the medieval Chester Mystery Plays.

Mystery plays, playlets based on bible stories, were popular in medieval Britain, but were banned during the 16th century. Using original manuscripts from the period, the city’s new Mystery Plays are held in the open before Chester Cathedral, with your group seated under awnings.

Featuring dance, acrobatics and international music, the Plays explore various stories from the bible, ranging from God’s six-day project to create the world and Adam and Eve to the predicted Apocalypse and Judgement.

The Chester Mystery Plays run from 28th June to 19th July in front of Chester Cathedral in Cheshire. One in every 20 tickets purchased is free. For more information telephone 01244 304618.
