Birmingham City Council has granted planning permission for the redevelopment of the city’s Digbeth Coach Station, which closed on 12th November.

The site’s owner, National Express, has announced that the site is now undergoing a 15 million pound renovation, which is due to be completed in late 2009.

The plans for the new building anticipate a modernist coach terminal, clad in copper plating and featuring a temperature-controlled waiting area, an enclosed passenger concourse through the coach parking zone and 16 coach bays, all situated externally to minimise the build up of fumes in the passenger areas. The new Station will also house new retail outlets in the main building and feature a ‘meet and greet’ drop off zone and short term customer car park.

For the duration of the closure, a temporary coach station, Digbeth Central, will be operating from nearby Digbeth High Street.
