Puerto Rico Tourism Company (PRTC), the body responsible for promoting the country to visitors, has announced that 10 coffee plantations will become tourist destinations and will be branded as the ‘Coffee Zone’, although timings for the plans have yet to be decided.

The 10 plantations, known as haciendas, are located in the towns of San Sebastian, Jayuya, Ponce, Adjuntas, Lares and Las Marias. It is hoped that the new Coffee Zone will boost a growing tourist sector known as agrotourism and draw attention to the island’s £60 million industry.

Special events and plantation tours will introduce visitors to the daily way of life on a hacienda, whilst groups will also be able to enjoy activities such as hiking, walking and bird watching in the mountainous regions where these plantations are located.
