Mauritian heritage site
Le Morne Mountain, in Mauritius, has been awarded World Heritage status, giving the island its second UNESCO-listed site.
The mountain was once used as a shelter by runaway slaves during the 18th and 19th centuries who then formed settlements in its caves and summit.
Le Morne now acts as a symbol of the slaves’ fight for freedom.
