Out of Africa

Australian-based entertainment company, Village Roadshow, has proposed plans for a new theme park, known as African Safari World, to be developed near Melbourne.

The project, which will cost an estimated 100 million pounds, has been designed as an extension to the existing Werribee Open Range Zoo and will involve a redevelopment of the Zoo to link it to the new theme park and its African safari theme.

The new attraction is likely to incorporate an African animal tour, rollercoasters, water rides, man-made lakes and mountains and a 4D theatre. Developments to the existing Zoo will include improvements to habitats and enclosures, additional animals, an education and conservation centre and an Australian animal area.

The development is still to receive backing from Zoos Victoria, the government-appointed organisation responsible for running the State’s zoos; however, a review of the proposals is expected shortly. If approved, the park could be operational by 2010.
