Spanish Africa
Situated on Spain’s southerly Costa del Azahar, the city of Valencia saw the opening of a new animal park earlier this month; Bioparc Valencia.
Housing over 4,000 animals from 250 different species, the park features three different habitats – African Savannah, Equatorial Africa and Madagascar – with a fourth, Kitum Cave, due to open this autumn.
The different habitat areas have been designed to recreate the animals’ native ecosystems, with the African Savannah home to giraffes, zebras, rhinos, elephants and impalas and featuring grassland and dense baobab forests. In the Equatorial Africa section, meanwhile, you can see wildlife native to the equatorial forests such as buffalos and leopards and take a walk to the observation area overlooking its recreated watering hole, where you can see pygmy hippopotami bathing. Lastly, the Madagascar habitat features smaller, less dangerous animals such as lemurs, and allows you to get up close with the creatures.
When completed, the new Kitum Cave will be able to house a herd of elephants as well as bats and other nocturnal animals.
Groups receive discounts and can pre-book guided tours.
