Visitor centre opens overlooking Icelandic concert centre site

A visitor centre overlooking the construction site of the new Icelandic National Concert and Conference Centre complex has opened in Reykjavik, Iceland.

Situated on the top floor of the Hafnarstraeti 20 building at Laekjartorg Square, the visitor centre contains scale models of how the Icelandic National Concert and Conference Centre building will look on completion in early 2009, and features a 10-metre long panoramic window where visitors can view the building work taking place below them. There is also a light wall that projects a 24-hour recording of Icelandic summer light, compressed into a one-hour installation.

Once construction work is complete, the National Concert and Conference Centre complex will house a 1,800-seat concert hall, 750-seat conference hall and a rehearsal hall for up to 450 performers. The building will also contain a top-floor restaurant, cafes and exhibition space. It will be connected to a new 250-bedroom hotel and Laekjartorg Square via a pedestrianised street made from glass bricks.

Access to the visitor centre is free of charge.
