Work begins on new terminal facility

Construction has begun on a £45 million extension to Terminal One at Birmingham International Airport.

The new extension will replace the existing ‘International Pier’ and is designed to accommodate seven wide-bodied aircraft (or environmentally-efficient ‘next generation’ planes) such as the Airbus A350 or the Boeing 787 ‘Dreamliner’.

The new Pier will be three-storeys in height and will cater for departing passengers on the top level, arriving passengers on the middle level and will contain offices for airline staff on the ground floor. Additionally, new gate lounges for passengers will be created.
