Details of Sea Change funding announced

Details have now been announced regarding the first stage of new investment in Britain’s coastal resorts. The funding is part of a government-backed £45 million Sea Change scheme, designed to regenerate seaside communities through investment in culture and heritage. Blackpool, Dover and Torbay will be the first towns to receive funding with £10 million set aside for the projects.

Blackpool will receive £4 million towards a 20,000-capacity outdoor performance area. There are also plans to re-design the streetscape from the Blackpool Tower to the Headland.

Dover will put £3.8 million of the funding towards a cable car, which will link the Western docks with the Castle. Improvements to Dover Castle’s secret wartime tunnels and Bleriot Monument will also take place.

Torbay, meanwhile, will see £2.2 million put towards projects at its English Riviera Geopark. Plans include ten new studios and a refurbished visitor centre, as well as improved access to Berry Head, known for its Napoleonic fort and a large guillemot colony.
