Hastings Museum and Art Gallery re-opens
After a £1 million refurbishment, the Hastings Museum and Art Gallery in East Sussex re-opened at the end of July boasting a variety of new features and exhibits.
Amongst new items on display, groups can view a replica ‘Mod’ Lambretta alongisde memorabilia from the infamous 1964 August Bank Holiday clash between the Mods and the Rockers in the town.
Additionally, a new room has been added, dedicated solely to John Logie Baird, who set up his first televisual system in Hastings. Replica equipment, just like the experimental equipment Baird used in his first broadcast, feature in the area as does the original ‘Maltese Cross’, which was shown in his pioneer broadcast.
The museum’s displays on conservationist Grey Owl, who was born in Hastings and associated himself heavily with the Great Lakes Indians of Canada, and Robert Tressell, author of the socialist tome the ‘Ragged Trousered Philanthropists’, who spent time living in the town, have also been updated.
Groups receive a discount on admission to the attraction.
