Institute of modern art opens in Middlesbrough
January saw the official opening of the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (mima) in Middlesbrough town centre, which has cost an estimated £14.2 million to build.
It boasts 4,000 square metres of exhibition space over five galleries, where temporary and travelling exhibitions are housed in addition to mima’s permanent collections.
These include over 3,000 paintings, drawings, prints, photographs and sculpture dating back to 1900 by the likes of Ben Nicholson, David Hockney and Bridget Riley.
The new building, which has taken around 18 months to complete, also features an education space, where educational workshops can be pre-booked, a café and a gift shop.
The opening exhibition entitled ‘Draw – Conversations Around the Legacy of Drawing’ has seen works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Andy Warhol displayed and will run until April 22nd.
The project has been funded by various sources including Middlesbrough Council, the Arts Council England and Tees Valley Partnership in Action.
Entry is free.
