Merseytravel, operator of Mersey Ferries, has opened its newest £5 million visitor attraction – U-Boat Story – at the Woodside Ferry Terminal in Birkenhead.

The World War II German U-boat submarine, U-534, which forms the basis of the attraction, has been separated into four sections.

Visitors can see inside each section from a specially-designed viewing platform.

An adjoining exhibition centre contains artefacts recovered from the wreck including a rare Enigma machine and personal artefacts such as clothing, cigars and playing cards. Filmed interviews with the survivors also feature.

Launched in 1942, U-534 was used for training and weather reporting during World War II. It was sunk by RAF aircraft in 1945 after crew failed to surrender.

Following a recovery operation in 1993, the submarine was displayed at the Historic Warship Museum, in Birkenhead, until its closure three years ago.

Discounts are available for pre-booked groups.
