Meanwhile, at the National Sea Life Centre in Birmingham, ‘Amazon Attack’ features dangerous creatures from the Amazon river and rainforest including piranhas, dart frogs and tarantulas. In May, the site will also be opening a turtle hatchery for endangered freshwater turtles.

At Great Yarmouth Sea Life Centre, in Norfolk, ‘Jellies’ is an exhibit based around one of the planet’s most primitive ocean species, the jellyfish. It features moon jellyfish, upside-down jellyfish and edible jellyfish.

Lastly, at Scarborough Sea Life and Marine Sanctuary, in Yorkshire, the Seal Hospital has been refurbished and doubled in capacity and a brand new Seal Academy has been set up. Here, visitors receive an introductory talk about seal rescue before comparing their weight, swimming ability, eyesight and diving ability with a seal in some of its interactive exhibits.
