Monocacy visitor centre opens

A former 1950s dairy barn is the new home of the Monocacy National Battlefield Visitor Center which, until recently, was located in the historic Gambrill Mill on the site.

The £1.5 million centre in Maryland has a wide view of the battlefield, which was the site of the Battle of Monocacy Junction in the American Civil War and features more than 2,000 square feet of exhibition space. Displays now include an electronic battlefield map detailing troop movements and various historical artefacts including guns, swords, clothing and a rare 17th Virginia Cavalry flag.

Entry to the visitor centre is free and groups can enjoy free 45-minute talks at the weekends.
