'Lost' wallpaper to be revealed
Visitors to the Leeds-based Harewood House stand at the upcoming Great Days Out Fair, will find details about the attraction’s ‘China and Chinoiserie’ theme for next year.
Starting in March 2008, the House will be displaying a 1760s Chinese wallpaper that was ‘lost’ for more than 150 years after being left abandoned in an outbuilding on the grounds. Depicting various scenes from 18th century Chinese life, every detail on the wallpaper has been hand painted.
The Wallpaper will be hung in the East Bedroom where it will be set against Thomas Chippendale’s chinoiserie furniture and a newly refurbished Chippendale bed. The accompanying exhibition, which will be located in the adjoining Watercolour Rooms, will feature items from Harewood’s collection of jade and porcelain, alongside Chinese-style furniture made by Chippendale.
Entry to the exhibition will be included in the price of the Group Freedom ticket, which enables access to other areas of the House and Gardens and also includes a free audio guide.
