Almeida revives Granville-Barker
The Almeida Theatre has announced plans to revive another play by Harley Granville-Barker, famous for his management of the Royal Court Theatre in the 1920s and his authorship of several hit plays. One of these, The Voysey Inheritance, was recently revived at the National to great acclaim.
This time, it will be Waste, his 1905 play about a radical politician who has an affair with a young woman who subsequently dies after an abortion – an event which wrecks both his career and planned reforming legislation. The work was not licensed for performance until the 1920s, and was last seen, directed by Peter Hall, at the Old Vic in 1997. The new production will be directed by Samuel West.
Waste will open at the Almeida Theatre in Islington from 25th September until 15th November.
