Nine people from the HMS Crane Association, part of the Royal Naval Association, enjoyed an impromptu outing to the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT) Centre in Slimbridge, Gloucestershire recently. Welfare Officer, Roy Lidgett explains, “The HMS Crane Association is made up of those who served on the ship HMS Crane during its various commissions and I saw a piece on the television about the launch of a project by the WWT to introduce the crane as a breeding species to Britain.”

This connection to the ship’s namesake, plus the fact that he only lives a few miles away, prompted Roy to get in touch with the centre at Slimbridge and the group were treated to a tour of the reserve, a tutorial on cranes and a demonstration of how staff rear the chicks by dressing up to resemble the adult birds! Says Roy, “It was an informative and enjoyable visit and we are even hoping to adopt one of the birds!”
