Provence by train
Forty-two members of the Peterborough U3A Travel Club got to experience the Provence region of France at the end of August, thanks to London-based tour operator Travel Editions. Says GTO Wallace Giddings, “The eight-day holiday was tailor-made for us by the company, which booked everything for us and provided one of the best tour managers I have ever worked with.”
The group travelled by coach to Waterloo to join the Eurostar for the journey to Lille. Changing trains here, the group jumped on the TGV heading for Marseille and after a short coach ride were welcomed with supper at the Holiday Inn Garden Court, Toulon. “This was a cracking hotel – the breakfasts were immense,” exclaims Wallace.
He goes on, “Our first excursion was to Marseille. Here we enjoyed a group dinner in a quayside restaurant with unlimited wine, which made sure the party went with a swing – it was a simply marvellous day!”
Other excursions included a visit to Aix-en-Provence, Monaco and St Tropez. “The trip to Monaco was a highlight,” says Wallace. “We had a guided tour and saw the Prince’s Palace and the Cathedral as well as the rally roads used for the Grand Prix and the famous Monte Carlo Casino amongst other things. A tired but very happy group told me they would not have missed it for anything.” He continues, “I cannot speak too highly of Travel Editions attention to detail, which ensured a splendid and memorable holiday.”
